Background of the Study
Forensic anthropology plays a pivotal role in the estimation of the post-mortem interval (PMI), a critical factor in death investigations. In Owerri Municipal Local Government Area, Imo State, the determination of PMI is increasingly reliant on anthropological methods that analyze skeletal and soft tissue changes over time (Chukwu, 2023). Recent technological advancements, including biochemical assays and digital imaging, have been integrated with traditional osteological assessments to refine time-since-death estimates (Nwankwo, 2024). However, fluctuating environmental conditions and variability in decomposition processes present significant challenges to accuracy. The study examines how factors such as temperature, humidity, and microbial activity influence PMI estimations and evaluates the reliability of forensic anthropological models in the local context (Eze, 2025). By critically analyzing current methodologies and comparing them with emerging techniques, this research aims to highlight both the strengths and limitations of forensic approaches in PMI estimation. The outcomes are anticipated to contribute to enhanced investigative accuracy, legal processes, and the overall efficiency of forensic investigations in Owerri Municipal, thereby fostering improved justice delivery.

Statement of the Problem
Despite progress in forensic methodologies, accurately estimating the post-mortem interval in Owerri Municipal remains problematic. Environmental variability, inconsistent decomposition rates, and limitations in current anthropological models contribute to significant margins of error in PMI estimation (Eze, 2025). These challenges affect the precision of time-of-death determinations, potentially impacting legal investigations and judicial outcomes. This study seeks to identify the core issues undermining the effectiveness of forensic anthropological techniques in PMI estimation and to explore potential methodological enhancements to reduce uncertainty and improve forensic accuracy (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the accuracy of forensic anthropological methods in estimating post-mortem intervals.

  • To investigate the influence of environmental factors on decomposition rates in Owerri Municipal.

  • To propose methodological improvements for enhanced PMI estimation.

Research Questions:

  • How effective are current forensic anthropological methods in estimating PMI in Owerri Municipal?

  • What environmental factors most significantly affect decomposition and PMI accuracy?

  • What improvements can be made to reduce errors in PMI estimation?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Enhanced digital imaging techniques improve the accuracy of PMI estimations.

  • H2: Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity significantly affect decomposition rates.

  • H3: Integrating biochemical assays with traditional methods reduces PMI estimation errors.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it enhances forensic anthropology by evaluating PMI estimation techniques in challenging environmental contexts. Its findings will inform forensic experts and law enforcement, leading to improved investigative accuracy and judicial reliability. By identifying key environmental variables and suggesting methodological refinements, the study contributes to optimized forensic procedures and more precise determinations of time-of-death (Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the forensic anthropological methods applied in post-mortem interval estimation within Owerri Municipal Local Government Area, Imo State. It does not extend to other regions or alternative forensic disciplines.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Post-Mortem Interval (PMI): The time elapsed since a person’s death.

  • Decomposition: The process by which organic substances are broken down after death.

  • Forensic Anthropology: The application of anthropological techniques in the legal investigation of human remains.
